Research-led making for meaningful design

Our studio is a space where drawing, collage and printmaking are used to test ideas about colour, structure and our relationship with the natural world.

Our research investigates natural forms and ecological systems; exploring how these might inform surface design and image-making.

There is a continual interplay between order and improvisation: grid structures meet hand-cut forms; illustration sits alongside intuitive mark-making.
The human trace, rooted in Walter Benjamin’s concept of “aura”, remains central, supported by traditional printmaking processes and a commitment to high-quality, sustainable materials.

Together, these strands form a practice interested in visual storytelling and the potential for pattern, colour and composition to build meaningful connections between people and place.

Based in West Yorkshire, the studio applies this research to create joyful, sustainable outcomes for surfaces and spaces.
Biophillia and Ecology
The studio draws much of its inspiration from the natural world. Biophilic design, the practice of connecting people to nature through design, underpins our approach: colour, form, pattern and composition are informed by seasonal rhythms, botanical structures, and the data held within ecological and geographical systems.
Research into species distribution, habitat change and ecological processes also shapes the work, reflecting a concern for biodiversity and environmental awareness.
Through image-making, we translate these observations into visual forms, exploring the dialogue between nature, data and design

Drawing and Image Making
Drawing is where every project begins.
Collage is our favoured methodology for building bold, graphic forms that easily adapt into screen print and digital production. Shapes are quickly hand cut from printed and painted papers, arranged and re-arranged, a dialogue between chance and intention. Ink, graphite, crayon and paint are used in combination to build images with added personality and interest.

We study structure and composition by making: botanical silhouettes, modular shapes and playful marks that investigate pattern and systems while celebrating organic irregularity.

Colour Narratives
Colour sits at the core of the studio, investigated as both a material and a metaphor in our work.
A proud recipient of a colour award and bursary by the Society of Dyers and Colourists, we study how colours interact, shift and influence one another; developing palettes, systems and tools that guide design decisions across analogue and digital design outputs.

Process
We favour processes where hand, material and surface remain closely connected.

Rooted in analogue printmaking, the studio explores how colour and image behave on paper and cloth. Even when/if a design moves into commercial, digital manufacture, retaining an authenticity of the original process and the presence of human hand remains important.
